KAMAL DEEP KAUR

Kamaldeep Kaur finished her graduation in zoology in 1991-1994 and was trained as a Fashion designer in the year 1994-1996 in New Delhi. She started her career from the house of Valdez-JJ Vallaya, one of the top fashion houses in India. But she was keen on learning more; thus she joined a weaving course at the Weavers Service Centre, Ahmedabad. Further she Learnt French, at L’Alliance Francaise .Photography was next in line, a short course from NID was enough inspiration.

During all this time she was working alongside, doing various Design development Projects for Development Commissioner Handicrafts and Handlooms, in the ministry of textiles. All of these projects were done in villages in various parts of India, mainly Gujarat .These projects gave her an in depth knowledge into the culture and lifestyle of the artisan, their families ,cultural issues ,setbacks .The whole scenario touched her so deeply that she decided to devote herself completely to the handcrafted textile products of Gujarat .

To categorize her knowledge in natural dyes acquired during her eight year experience in the textile industry, she joined National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad to do her research in natural dyes. Where the information was well documented along with proper experimentation .She is presently working on a book on the same subject.

Damask her label was launched in 1997, as she started getting orders for her designs from various design stores. She launched her label with soft furnishings and moved on to creating the Indian salwar kameez. The first order of silk scarves and shawls came around 1998, and than there was no turning back.

Neelgar the second company started production in the year 2002.Under this brand strictly natural dyed products were created. The products designed by Kamaldeep Kaur are further given to master craftsmen to produce, who have been specially trained for the purpose.

NEELGAR

Neelgar the second company started production in the year 2002.Under this brand strictly natural dyed product are created.

Kamaldeep developed an interest in natural dyes during her design course in New Delhi. She started experimentation with garden plants around the house. The first large scale introduction to natural dyes was in the village of Dhamadka, when she saw Ajrakh printing. The sheer fact that natural dyes are possible on such a large scale was a big surprise.

Next came the various design development Projects for The Development Commissioner Handicrafts and Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles .These helped discover a lot of traditional recipes and introduction of newer methods of dyeing to the craftsmen.

After seven years of working in the field she joined National institute of Design –NID, Ahmedabad to do her research in natural dyes. “STANDARDIZATION OF DYE MATERIALS AND PROCESSES FOR SELECTED SHADES” was the subject and the results tested at the national laboratory were highly satisfactory.

She has thus been invited to many international conferences, textiles fairs and symposiums for demonstrations and showcasing her products. Her work has been showcased in international art exhibitions.
